Memoirs of Hiking on an 80 year old’s Birthday

The Mary Lester Celebratory Hike

Mary, Mary, is just a little bit contrary

But on her 80th Birthday she did not tarry

More than 2 score gathered near the burg of Bellemore

To bring Mary’s milestone birthday to the fore

To signify that we think Mary is the best

Her pictorial badge was worn proudly on our chest

So Mary led us on her favorite 22 miles

And the group started with happy smiles

Mary’s flying feet moved in a whirlwind blur

She is a hiker at 80 just turning mature

Challenges were provided by up and downs

And sunny weather brought smiles all around

Over cliffs and ridges and valleys in the county of Parke

Certainly the scenery was pretty not stark

At the covered bridge a tired Ellen stretched out

And Ed limped due to the effects of his gout

We came to the flea market at Mansfield’s store

And only the ruggedest fleas came to the fore

But we finally made it back to the parking lot

Except for Mary, all were tired and hot

Next to the lively Roadhouse to celebrate the time

And drink beer and tell many lies sublime

We now had Mary’s picture on our shirt

Not a bad hike for one older than dirt

We gave Mary fabulous gifts and many a hug

Meanwhile the Bud Lite we continued to chug

The hike will provide much to the club’s lore

Especially Ed and Jeff groaning on the floor

We left knowing we had nothing to fear

Because Mary’s birthday comes but once a year

Mary, Mary, is just a little bit contrary

But on her 80th Birthday she did not tarry
