PRESIDENT'S CORNER - June 2008
At our last board meeting the membership of the Indianapolis Hiking Club stood at 717 members. This growth is due to many reasons, but one is the positive publicity that we have received in the community. Articles are being written about the Club in local newspapers and we have appeared on TV. Booths are being set up to help promote the Club at various health fairs and other events. And of course, word of mouth by our members is a large contributor to the growth in membership. I want to personally thank everyone who has volunteered his or her time to promote our great organization. By the way, did you see Tish Brafford's hike on WRTV, Channel 13 a few weeks ago?
The board recently voted to require that in order to receive Club mileage when participating in an event that requires registration and/or a participation fee, such as the Mini-marathon and the Race for the Cure, you must register for the event and pay the applicable fee. Registration instructions are usually included in the hike description. It is the responsibility of each member, not the hike leader, to enforce this rule change. This is being done to protect the integrity of the Club. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to call me at 317-439-6930.
Becky Daily at 828-1953 from Horizons Christian Daycare Center needs volunteers to lead hikes with kids for an hour or two in the afternoons at Eagle Creek Park. She anticipates about 15 kids at the 4th grade level. There is a group leader supervising the kids; they just need someone to lead the hike. It would probably only be once a week at about 1:00 PM, so not a big time commitment.
Some food for thought: Do you know what $0.56 can buy you? This is the rise in the price of a gallon of regular gas since my last President's Corner. My last message asked everyone to consider carpooling, especially on hikes farther away. I would like to expand on this message. Please consider carpooling, even around town. Hike leaders, please think about setting up a meeting place for carpooling and include with your hike description.
There are several people working on a special project for the March 2009 General Assembly and we need your help. Please send digital pictures of 2008 Club events and hikes to Michelle Buchanan. You can email them to her at mbuchanan11@comcast.net or send her a CD. Include a brief description of the photos. We are looking for at least 250 pictures, the more the better. While you're at it also send photos to Ed Wright at ewright@indyhike.org to include on the Club web site.
One of our long-standing members, Tracy Benson, is serving with the Army in Iraq. Tracy would love to hear from you. Her email address is tracy.benson@us.army.mil.
Sandy Fillenwarth, Rick Maxwell and Mary Williams have volunteered to be on the Nominating Committee for 2009 board members who will take office on October 1. A slate of candidates will be published in the next schedule. If you are interested in serving on the board, please let someone on the committee know.
Finally, I would like to congratulate seven members who recently completed a 62 mile (100K) hike from Washington DC to Harpers Ferry, WV. They tied the Club's single day distance record set in the same event the two prior years. The following members completed the 100K, some for a 2nd and 3rd time: Cathy Bridge (2 times), Frank Bymaster (3 times), Rita Bymaster (3 times), Sandy Fillenwarth, Anthony Povinelli (2 times), Allan Roberts and Cindy West (3 times).
Respectfully,
Ronald L. Higdon, President
